The Treatment of Canada's First Nations

Summary:

‘I created this assignment because I wanted students to think critically about what they consider to be essential information that every person should know about the treatment of Canada’s First Nations at the hands of various foreign and domestic governments. Although the list could be endless, I had them focus on what they determined to be five things or over-arching themes that our population needs to know about this particular topic. I also had them consider how they would not only present this information to a member of the public content-wise but visually as well. Their chosen artifact seemingly gives their words added impact and allows the “museum visitor” a more moving and meaningful experience.’


General Tasks:

Part 1: Students make a research and take notes about the assignment, helped by a list of resources given by the teacher.

Part 2: They create a shortlist of five important people, concepts, ideologies and events, and then a list of arguments explaining their place on the list using various sources.

Part 3: They collect images for the shortlist.

Part 4: Students write the formal copy of the assignment.


Evaluation Criteria:

Degree of understanding; effectiveness in the evaluation of the shortlist elements’ importance; clarity and coherence of communication; justification of the choice of images.
