About the Award
The Government of Canada History Awards were officially announced in June 2013. Their goal is connect youth to their history by honouring outstanding students and teachers who show an interest in celebrating Canadian history. The awards are administered by Canada’s History, an independent national charitable organization whose mission is to promote greater popular interest in Canadian history.
Events that have been designated for commemoration include the War of 1812, the centennial of the Canadian Arctic Expedition, the 200th anniversary of the birth of Sir George-Étienne Cartier and Sir John A. Macdonald, the 75th anniversary of the Second World War, the 100th anniversary of the First World War, the 100th anniversary of Women receiving the right to vote, and of course, the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017.
