Three Day Road Redux

Summary:

‘The objectives of the learning experience focussed on the understanding of specific structures of narrative through the reading and writing of fiction while commenting on their own experience in a colonial or post­colonial society. The experience sought to develop empathy in the learners while allowing them to experiment with writing and open their consciousness to a variety of stories within Canadian history.’


General Tasks:

Part 1: As a cross-curricular activity, students read Three Day Road, a historical novel, while noting the colonial, imperial and indigenous aspects and analyzing the relationship between Europeans and Natives.

Part 2: Students write an essay on how the colonialist treaties, legislation and attitudes impacted on the Natives.

Part 3: Students rewrite chapters of the book, alternatively adopting colonist and native point of view. The work is the published.


Evaluation Criteria:

Deepness of critical thinking; solidness of evidences; overall logic of the argument; quality of writing.
