Introduction to Canadian Residential Schools

Challenging students to reconcile contradictory historical narratives through research.
This particular task was developed due to frustration with the tendency of students to uncritically flock to Wikipedia for information, especially on the historic topic of Residential Schools. There are so many rich primary and secondary documents accessible to Canadians about the Residential School system and this task was designed to engage students in using those resources to build skills and understanding.

During this research assignment students will:
  • Engaged in deliberate inquiry and research to explore an historic issue
  • Access electronic media & multi-media to learn and inform themselves
  • Develop and practice critical/historical thinking to evaluate information
  • Develop and practice skills of research citation
  • Communicate understanding and results through creation of an historical narrative
