Sharing our Past

The objective of this essay is to present 19th-century urban dynamics through a lens of human-horse relations. This will be done in order to help us better understand how our cities developed the way they did and how our current urban environments are direct reflections of how past Canadians understood and viewed their municipalities. With new methods and historical perspectives, and by using less traditional primary sources such as photographs and maps, this research shows that we can learn more about our shared past as living beings. These reflections bring to light dynamics which would otherwise remain invisible in Canadian urban history.
