Exhibit A: Curating World War I

Summary:

‘In this two-part challenge, students will consider the significance of 3 major battles in which Canadians fought during the First World War. Students will be introduced to the concept of historical significance through the use of a contemporary scenario, practicing the skills they will use in their historical challenge. In the first part of the challenge, students will be given briefing sheets on three First World War battles: Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, and Ypres. Using the Blackline Master (BM) provided, students will assess the relative significance of each battle based upon the provided criteria, and make notes for each battle according to the criteria. Finally, as a summative exercise students will argue for the inclusion of one of the battles in the World War I exhibit in the Canadian Museum of History.’


General Tasks:

Part 1: Students are introduced to three major battles of WWI and to the concept of historical significance.

Part 2: Students assess the relative significance of each battle using several criteria.

Part 3: Students argue on the inclusion of one battle in the WWI exhibition in the Canadian Museum of History.


Evaluation Criteria:

Accuracy and relevancy of information; plausibility of rating.
