From Headlines to Picket Lines

Students explore the concept of media bias through the examination of newspaper accounts of the Winnipeg General Strike written in 1919. Students develop a set of criteria to determine whether an account is biased or non-biased and analyze a set
of newspaper accounts of the strike. Rather than dismissing biased accounts, students determine what could be learned about the time period from the types of biased expressions used. Finally, students create their own unbiased accounts of the strike
using the same set of criteria which is then peer assessed.
