Tom Longboat

The Canadian was lapping at a much faster pace, and was much too close now, when he made the final pass the Brit collapsed. The race was only being finished by the man called "everything." Tom Longboat or Cowagee meaning everything, was an Onondaga runner from the Six Nations reserve, who achieved the status of a world class marathoner. It would seem he did everything for his country. His physical and mental strength set Canada apart from others in the running world. Tom fought under the Canadian flag valiantly during WW1, demonstrating his courage in Canada’s two major battles. Throughout his life he persevered, under the powerful forces of systemic racism to stay true to who he was and where he came from.
