Vimy Oak: A Tree of Remembrance

April 9th 1917: All four of the Canadian divisions had been trained for weeks for what was coming, at 5:30 Canadian soldiers would push up Vimy Ridge whilst allied bombs landed just in front of them becoming known as the “creeping barrage” . As the soldiers pushed up the sleet covered hill and the wind pushed them forward almost as a sign to keep going. The soldiers would take the hill and in just three days the Canadians had taken Vimy Ridge. A lieutenant named Leslie Miller had been a part of the expeditionary division and had taken part in the taking of the hill, Leslie hunted for something to bring back home but due to the hill being shelled for weeks and weeks it was a barren wasteland. As Leslie scavenged the hill he came across a half buried oak tree along the hill, he gathered the acorns and sent them back to his family.

I chose this question because this year is the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge and we have a Vimy Oak planted right here in Waterdown.
