Discovering Canada's Niche in the World

By the arrival of the twentieth century, Canada was a British dominion and an agrarian backwater on the Arctic fringes of North America. Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the country’s Prime Minister at the time, had stated that “I think we can claim that Canada will fill the twentieth century”. If this quote is interpreted to consist of Canada’s international role rather than its economic or industrial might, then through examination of Canada’s situation in 1900 and the nation’s growth on the international stage throughout the century, it can be seen that Laurier's prediction was correct; Canada played a vital role in world affairs by maintaining peace using both strength and diplomacy.
