Project: Walter Pitcher and the Monchy Ten

The Newfoundland Regiment's contribution at the battle of Arras. Highlighting Walter Pitcher, from Old Bonaventure.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

Originally 11 men set out to protect the town of Monchy Le Preux. During a sprint to their vantage point 2 men were shot down by enemy fire. The 9 were later joined by another man who was previously knocked out by a bursting shell. In total there were actually 12 men who made an effort to protect against the enemies after everyone else was incapable.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

The men who fought in the World Wars were not just soldiers, but everyday people. The Monchy Ten's contribution at the battle of Arras is a story that should not be forgotten. Newfoundland and Canada should be very proud of what The Royal Newfoundland Regiment accomplished there.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

My life is much less difficult than the lives of the men and women from the the early 1900s. I'm currently going to school and involved in many activities. Where as in the early 1900s boys my age would be quitting school to work/join the regiment. And girls my age would start helping with the younger children, cooking, cleaning and making clothes.
