Steps towards Reconciliation
‘Historically there has always been political and cultural tension between European Peoples who would later come to be known as Canadians and the original Aboriginal inhabitants of Canada. Through the act of apologizing for the misdoings of previous governments, the gap of misunderstanding is now being mended. This act has made a tremendous effect in terms of continuity due to the fact that by bridging this gap, Canada’s cultural mosaic is expanding, as the Canadian government is no longer trying to assimilate Aboriginal Peoples. Another effort that has been made by the Canadian government was a formalized compensation package which was developed in 2007. An astounding number of 1.9 billion dollars was to be given to those who were forced to attend residential schools, and as of September 30, 2013 1.6 billion has been paid off. Once again, this effort by the current government has lasting effects on the relationship between the Native Peoples of Canada and the government. It is most definitely true that money alone cannot pay for the emotional trauma the victims and family members have undergone. However, it can and does ensure that those who are still alive will be able to live a long and prosperous life and be able to attain the help they need if they choose to.’
