The Ripple Effect that Began in Manitoba

As with all change, suffrage had to start somewhere, and as far as women’s rights in Canada go, it was Manitoba who offered the first real legislative action and started Canada on its path to equality in the twentieth century.  Through the efforts of Nellie McClung and her fellow leaders, the Liberal government of Manitoba, and the Winnipeg Political Equality League, women finally began to be treated more equally. At first equality was only in Manitoba, then in the entirety of Canada as it became part of our national identity.  This is one of the greatest achievements for women’s rights in the history of Canada and should always be a struggle that is remembered with pride.
