Congratulations! It's a....Country?
‘Additionally, Vimy Ridge stands out as Canada's most defining moment because of the enduring legacy it has left behind in history, as well as in the eyes of ordinary citizens. The CMR are still considered to be one of, if not the best Canadian regiment to ever exist. Despite the fact that nearly 100 years have passed since the onset of WWI, and their creation, they remain exalted in the eyes of Canadians for their brave sacrifices and the innovativeness that allowed them to triumph at Vimy. In classroom settings there is a great deal of focus on the Battle of Vimy and it is still a great source of pride for Canadians today. Students are taught extensively about Canada's success and its later impact, and will be educated about the subject for decades to come. What's more, the legacy of Vimy is preserved through the monument established in France in 1936 in honour of Canada's contribution. With pillars standing 226 ft. high, and a weeping Mother Canada as the centerpiece, the structure can be seen for miles, ensuring that none in the vicinity ever forget the victory that was won on that spot. Canada will always have the right to oversee the memorial, and even today soldiers and civilians make pilgrimages to the site to see the 11,000 names carved into the memorial. In 2007, a group of Canadian students flew across the ocean in order to pay their respects on the 90th anniversary of Vimy. Each of the 3,600 students constructed a tribute to a soldier who fell in battle, and Queen Elizabeth was there to meet them. The monument has been present on the Sacrifice medal awarded to soldiers since 2001, signifying the lasting importance of that fateful day. The dedication shown by Canadians today to the legacy of Vimy proves without a doubt that it should be regarded as Canada’s defining moment.’
