There have been countless historically significant events that have shaped Canada into the “strong and free” nation it is today, but there is also a particular moment in Canada’s history that has shaped my identity as a young Canadian with the freedom to love and the strength to be who I was meant to be. The protest against the gay bathhouse raids of 1981 is a profound moment in Canadian history that has shaped my identity as a young woman with an impregnable sense of self and the will to fight for what I believe in.
I chose this question because I wanted a chance to explore some events in my country's history that greatly reflect my identity.
I'm immensely proud of being Vietnamese, even more so of being Canadian and wanted to share the story that made it so.
It's easy to relate to because I have a lot of family history relating back to World War II.
