A Pivotal Achievement in a Long-Running Struggle

[T]he work of Nellie McClung, the influence of the written word, and the Political Equality League’s peaceful opposition to the Roblin Tories were crucial factors in the achievement of suffrage for Prairie women in 1916. This great change was achieved slowly, through a succession of events during which peaceful opposition and strong female voices challenged previously concrete ideals. Unfortunately, the racially prejudiced AngloSaxon views within the suffrage movement diminished the 1916 achievement through excluding “foreign” and native women. It is unquestionable that great change began to occur for many Canadian women in 1916. However, suffrage for all Canadian women was only fully achieved in the 1960’s , when all women were finally able to vote provincially and federally.

I enjoy reading 19th and 20th century literature; I always find the societal differences between present day and those eras to be striking.
