The Supply & Demand of Immigrants

The comparisons between the treatment of Italians and Finnish immigrants show how the supply and demand of an occupation shaped the experience of these immigrants. While both immigrant groups were enticed to Canada with less strict immigration laws to fill a labour shortage, the high influx of Italian immigrants meant that they were seen as disposable by their bosses and, in comparison, the lack of domestic servants meant that Finish immigrants were given much better treatment and looked after by their employers. It is no surprise that Italian immigrants kept wanting to return home, while Finnish immigrants in domestic service found it much easier to become accustomed to their new lives in Canada.

I am fascinated by the treatment of different groups that arrive in Canada and how each is often linked to certain jobs and industries.
