Validity of Laurier's Statement

Many historians argue that nation-states, such as the United States of America, dominated much of the late nineteenth century due to their rapid expansion, economic success, and influence on international affairs. America experienced an overhaul in urbanization, industrialization and military might. Amidst such circumstances, what made Canadian Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier state, “I think we can claim that Canada will fill the twentieth century”? Canada during the past century has made remarkable progress in all sectors of society ranging from enormous economic growth to increased influence in global politics. Furthermore, it has also made significant strides in social aspects such as adopting a national multicultural identity and an increasingly pluralistic immigration policy. In short, Canada made incredible developments in its social, political, and economical sectors, fulfilling Laurier’s claim.

My favorite parts of history are how Canada fits into the global community and comparing our past with the histories of other countries.
