The Canadian Identity in the 20th Century

When Canada first progressed into the 20th Century, the nation was confused: some were confident about Canada’s future, while others were concerned with several global turbulences and social issues. As a representative of the optimists, the Canadian Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier confidently declared, “I think we can claim that Canada will fill the twentieth century.” Just as Laurier predicted, Canada’s 20th century was a significant transformation in the nation’s history, especially in terms of political autonomy, social justice and economic development. As the course of history has proven, Canada truly “filled” the century by forging a unique and proud Canadian identity.
