An Immigrant's Identity in a Multicultural Country

“Canada is multicultural, that’s part of our identity,” says Tom Kent, an immigrant to Canada in 1954 who became the deputy minister of Citizenship and Immigration in 1966. Immigration has always been a major part of the Canadian history. Without immigrants from all around the world, Canada could never enjoy the benefits of mixed cultures. The passing of multiculturalism policies have led Canada to become open and accepting towards diverse cultures. As a student from Hong Kong whose mother is a Canadian immigrant, the development of immigration policies of Canada and the passing of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act have played major roles in affecting my identity as a Canadian.
