Even Good Days Have Bad Ones

March 10th 2015. My daughter came home about a week ago with a field trip form to go to Toronto's first LGBT shelter. Of course, my husband and I didn’t decline; we were ecstatic when she asked. I told her to get me a volunteer sheet so I could come. Now my daughter and I were sitting on a school bus on our way to the shelter. I couldn’t wait to see the opening of the shelter. After a good two hours on an uncomfortable bus seat, we arrived at the red bricked house. People filled the street waiting for the grand opening of the shelter. Another wave of community filled my body. An older looking man walks out of the shelter holding absurdly large scissors to cut the rainbow rope in front of the shelter. He gave a heartwarming speech about how hard the LGBT community worked to get the shelter and that we’ll always fight for our rights. I nod my head in agreement.

I am an ally for the LGBT community myself. Being a Canadian is so amazing and being an ally is also amazing too.
