Project: Appetites of Aboriginals

My project looks at how the Aboriginal people traditionally used natural resources to provide food for themselves. I used modern day technology and ingredients to create two of their dishes.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The most interesting thing that I learned was that the Inuit ate high fat food and it allowed them to survive the extreme cold winters. It was also neat to see how they could find a use for every part of the animal and not have anything go to waste.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

It is important for Canadians to understand how Aboriginal people were resourceful in being able to live and survive in their environment. They used natural resources and they did not waste anything. They shared what they had and were creative in what they made.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

Our life today is much easier in the sense that we can just go to the grocery store and pick up ingredients. They had to think ahead and be prepared for the winter months. Unfortunately, I think we waste more today than years ago.

Any other comments you’d like to share with this Young Citizen?: I've gone to a traditional camp and there we made bannock over a campfire.
