Project: Who was Ian Calder?
My project is about the man my street was named after; Ian Calder. He was one of the first dentists in the Northwest Territories. My project concentrates on Ian Calder and Peter Bromley's canoe trip on the Back River. This trip was their centennial project, retracing the steps of George Back.
Mon projet est à propos le nom de mon rue ; Ian Calder. Il était un des premiers dentistes aux Territoires du Nord Ouest. Mon projet concentre sur le voyage de canotage d’Ian, et son ami Peter Bromley sur le rivière Back. Ce voyage était leur projet Centenaire, retraçant le voyage de George Back.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?
The most interesting thing I learned about my project was the story Bob Bromley told me about their canoe trip on the Back River. Ian, Bob and Peter were in the canoe when it capsized. Bob (who was only 16 at the time) swam to shore while Peter and Ian tried to bring the canoe ashore. Bob was stranded for 10 days without food or dry clothing before he was rescued.
La chose le plus intéressent que j'ai appris était l'histoire que Bob Bromley m’a raconter à propos du voyage de canoe sur le rivière Back. Ian, Bob et Peter était dans la canoe lorsqu’elle a chaviré. Bob, (qui était seulement 16) avait nagé pendant que Ian et Peter a essayé d’amener le canoe à l’ile aussi. Bob était pris pendant dix journées sans nourriture ni vêtement sèche. Pendant le dixième jour, il était sauvé.
What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?
I learned a lot about the history and lives of the people from Yellowknife.
J’ai appris beaucoup par rapport les peuples de Yellowknife et leur histoire.
How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?
I think their lives would have been more difficult than mine because it would easier to plan the canoe trip with today’s technology. The maps would be more precise and they could have used a device to call for help when the canoe flipped.
Je pense que la vie d’Ian Calder serait plus difficile que la mienne. Aujourd’hui, ça serait plus facile à planifié un voyage, grâce aux informations et technologies nouveaux. Je pense aussi que les cartes qu'ils ont utilisé serait meilleur aujourd’hui et ils auront un appareil pour demandé l'aide lorsque leur canoe avait chaviré.
