Joshua Winnipeg, Manitoba
Fair address: Red River Heritage Fair
Project: #RielHero
My project aims to discover the life and legacy of Louis Riel and to highlight his heroism. I also wanted to know who Louis Riel is in the eyes of the younger generation, so I conducted an online survey. As part of my research, I visited some of the historic sites in Winnipeg.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?
After conducting the survey, I learned that there were few students who don’t know Louis Riel well. My video aims to introduce him to generations both young and old.
What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?
After doing my Heritage Fair project, I came up with 5 reasons why Louis Riel is a real hero. First, he was a great leader. Second, he was a patriot who stood up for his beliefs. Third, he was a defender of human rights and freedom. Fourth, he was the reason why Manitoba became a province. And finally, he demonstrated bravery and ended up losing his life for a great cause.
How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?
Today’s life is easier than in the past. I’m thankful for living in a more peaceful environment. Two years from now, Manitoba will celebrate its 150th birthday. As a Manitoban, I’m grateful for what Louis Riel has done for our province. Manitoba wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for him.
