Fair address: Yukon/Stikine Regional Heritage Fair
Project: North West Mounted Police
How the North west Mounted Police helped keep the peace across Canada. The North West Mounted Police were trusted by the First Nation people. The NWMP kept thing in order in the Yukon during the Gold Rush.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?
That there was the North West Mounted Police, and that the NWMP formed into the RCMP. And,
I found out that there is still a NWMP house still standing this very day in Carmacks, Yukon.
What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?
How much the North West Mounted Police helped Canada. Sam Steele was a big guy in the North West Mounted Police. How they stopped the Americans when the Americans where flying their flag and traded whisky with the First Nation.
How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?
How hard it was back then and you think we have it hard but if you look at the People long ago their life was harder. They had to get their own food to a far away place, Dawson City. Mining was harder. Communication was much harder. No email, no phones, so they wrote letters. It took a long time to get letters.
Food was expensive in the Gold Rush times. Most of the time, poor people had to find food themselves or hunt for it.
