Emma Lincoln, New Brunswick
Fair address: Anglophone West Regional Heritage Fair (Woodstock)
Project: Patrick Owens Covered Bridge
An overview of the 2nd longest covered bridge in New Brunswick. The last of 4 remaining in Rusagonis. A very important part of our local history.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?
Learning just the history of why it is named after Patrick Owens is very interesting. As well as the original cost compared to what it would cost today.
What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?
Preserving local history is important. Small communities need to work hard at maintaining it for future generations to enjoy. Residents of small communities and large as well should make a point to become familiar with the history of their community.
How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?
Today we live a life of convenience, not a life of necessity like in 1909. The bridge was built to facilitate going to the market, something that we would not even think of as an issue today.
