Project: My Oma's Story

My project is based on my Oma's immigration from Austria to Canada when she was 8 years old.  I focused on many aspects of her life in Austria, her journey to Canada, and her new life in Regina.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I thought it was interesting that my Oma faced all this in her life and I get to see her often. I also liked the story of how my Oma's mom put a cactus in the window at her home in Austria so the children wouldn't fall out the window.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I have learned that it was difficult for not only my Oma to leave her home behind but also for all immigrants who look to start a new life in a new country. They face many hardships on their journeys but also in adjusting to life in a new place. My Oma's story was very important to Canada's history because immigrants brought families, food, and new traditions which have shaped the culture we now have in Canada.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

Immigrants nowadays have technology such as planes and computers which makes communication with family members much easier. The time for travelling is much less. Immigrants who come to Canada now might know some English to get them started and when they arrive there is help for these immigrants.

Great job. Your video was awesome. I loved how you had your Oma tell some of the stories, and how you had a picture of their actual home in Austria. I also liked how you used Pow Toon in your video. Great idea.

Your Oma's story is so wonderfully portrayed, Emma. It's so true that advances in communication and technology have made it somewhat easier for new immigrants today.
