Project: Drumming is the heart beat

My video is about aboriginal drumming and how it is important to so many people. I learned about songs and when and where people drum and dance.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

When I was researching the different kinds of drums, other students came to me and told me they knew how to drum and knew songs to sing with drumming. They sang in my video.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I learned that many aboriginal cultures have many styles of drums. There are more than 40 different tribes or clans in Canada. Each drum is special or sacred to the drummer.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

The drum creates a heartbeat of Mother Earth and when people drum and sing they express themselves in many ways. People are relearning this ancient style of music for ceremonies.

Comments from fellow Young Citizens!

Emily from BC says:

What was your favourite part of this video?: My favourite part of the video was listening to the girl sing the song while beating the drum. I had never really seen someone performing an Aboriginal song before, so that was interesting to listen to. I also thought the narrator sounded very professional and he was really pleasing to listen to.

What do you think this Young Citizen did really well?: What I think Erin did well was pick appropriate images for the voice over. I think the pictures that she used really enhanced my overall viewing experience. I also think she did a great job making sure all the information presented was interesting and important.

What did you learn from the video?: From this video, I learned that even though drumming was a very important component to Aboriginal culture, the government ruthlessly banned it, making many Aboriginal families unable to uphold heir traditions.

Any other comments you’d like to share with this Young Citizen?: I think your video was well put together and very interesting to listen to! The information was very clear and easy to understand.

Emelyne from ON says:

What was your favourite part of this video?: My favourite part of this video was that you actually got someone to drum and sing for you. I found that it really tied the video all together.

What do you think this Young Citizen did really well?: What I think was done really well in this video was that there were lots of interesting related pictures in this video.

What did you learn from the video?: What I learned from this video was that the drum is important to Aboriginal people and that in some places at some times it was not very respected.
