Past Winners 2011

Divya Santhanam2011 English winner: Divya Santhanam
University of Toronto School — Toronto, Ontario

Divya's illustrated story A Long Forgotten Treasure is about a young boy who opens his grandfather's parcel to find a Victoria Cross. Although he doesn't know what 'valour' means, he feels it is important. His grandfather tells his grandson about the deeds that earned him the medal, and why he gave it away.

Emilya Snow2011 French winner: Emilya Snow
Greenwood, Nova Scotia

Emilya Snow created La déportation des acadiens, a comic depicting the deportation of the Acadians. Brightly coloured, she concisely conveys the exportation order announcing the choice given to the Acadians — leave now or face imprisonment in the Grand-Pré church — and imagines the thoughts that departing Acadians likely had as they left their homes behind.
