Baldwin and Lafontaine: Our Founding Fathers
Baldwin and Lafontaine have a right to the title of founding fathers. Despite not being at the confederation conferences, they set the groundwork for the Canadian government to become independent and unified through their bicultural cooperation, their leading of the first true responsible government, and by proving that Canada would be a self-governing nation without war or disrespect to Great Britain. They passed multiple acts on the use of the French language in Parliament and the Courts, as well as the communication of laws to the people. When the idea of responsible government was abused by British control, they revolutionized the function of the government system, and became the first government leaders truly responsible to the people of Canada.
