Commemorating The Battle Of Vimy Ridge

‘One of the greatest factors that contributed in the creation of Canadian identity through the battle of Vimy Ridge, were the Canadian troops themselves. For the first time, all four Canadian divisions fought united for the same objective which was to win the battle. Despite being fifty years old at the time of the battle, Canadian troops proved to be capable of being independent by successfully winning the battle in a short period of time. All four divisions completed their part of the battle in an organized manner as a team. They captured all the lines in a matter of moments. This invoked a sense of patriotism among many citizens as they felt proud to be Canadians. Moreover, they won the battle as Canadians. Being under British dominance, Canada always was just a mere allied country. If Britain went to war, so did Canada, not because they wished to independently but because they had to fulfill their duty towards Britain. The victory Canada earned after the battle raised a new insight among other countries. It proved to other countries that Canada is strong, intelligent and independent. This attitude gave Canada many opportunities to separate itself under the name of Britain.’
