Indigenous Lands in the Spirit of Reconciliation

Before we begin to know more about the Indigenous people in our community, it is important to understand their beliefs and values throughout history. Their ancestors who have lived here developed rich cultures incorporating the teachings of the land as part of their identity. But colonization and acts of cultural genocide have diminished Indigenous way of life as their land was used by means of exploitation. As we move forward we must introduce a larger emphasis of these important issues to students of all ages to ensure a future of open-minded individuals with creative solutions. In the spirit of reconciliation we must begin to understand the connection Indigenous peoples have to the land and realize the cultural loss of taking it away as we educate newer generations to begin the process of restoring the land that was stolen from the Indigenous.
