Identity is What You Are, Not What They See

A mysterious figure watched as the smoke raised high above the fallen cities. He could hear the gunshots crying and the soldiers marching towards a heavily sought out victory.

“What are you doing down here?” A voice said as someone appeared right behind him. “Cecil.” The cloaked figure announced, turning to meet the newcomer. “I’m just watching.”

The newcomer wore clothes unlike the people in this world, but they were similar to his. “What are you watching Eldred?” Cecil asked, clearly intrigued at what his friend would be doing at a place like this, at a time like this.

“They’re at war.” Eldred stated, resuming his attention to the battle below. “Why don’t you watch a more interesting battle? This place, Ypres, is gruesome.” Cecil said, then pointed down at the soldiers. “Those are definitely Canadian troops. Why observe them? The British soldiers seem to have more potential.”

“I see that you don’t see Canada’s significance in this.” Eldred said in a calm voice. “The Germans attacked quite brutally and the Canadian troops were sent to help defend about 3.5 km of the front line.” Cecil shrugged. “Is that all you’ve observed? Why is that so important?”

Eldred nodded and continued, “this was the showcase of a new weapon, poison gas. To be faced with a new tactic by your enemy results in many losses, especially if you don’t know how to defeat it. Yet, these Canadian troops were the only ones to hold their position and successfully counter attack.”

I chose this question because I think it's important to talk about how history affects the present.
