THE FATHERS OF PRE-CONFEDERATION CANADA
Louis H. Lafontaine and Robert Baldwin, the facilitators of responsible government, should be considered as the founders of what was to become Canada, because their contributions formed the basis of the unity among Canadians, leading to the creation of a new nation-state by the Confederation in 1867. Firstly, economic development achieved through responsible government encouraged participation in Confederation in order to attain the benefits of domestic trade and commerce. Moreover, the feasibility of prosperity through Anglophone and Francophone alliance under responsible governance was proved a reality, despite their cultural difference. Finally, the public gained enhanced political awareness through the internal reforms initiated by the Lafontaine-Baldwin government. The achievement of “responsible government” by Baldwin and Lafontaine laid the foundation of Confederation. Yet, today, Canadians know very little about these historic personalities, although their legacy is in continuous effect in the Canadian political system.
