William Hebenton

He served as a gunner with the 15th Brigade, 62nd Battery of the Canadian Field Artillery and spent most of the war in action near Arras and Lens.


William Hebenton, an immigrant from Scotland, enlisted on April 25, 1916 from Victoria, British Columbia. He trained as a gunner with the 15th Brigade, 62nd Battery of the Canadian Field Artillery at Petawawa, Ontario and sailed from Halifax to England on September 13, 1916. After further training in England, the battery sailed for France on August 22, 1917. The battery spent most of the war in action near Arras and Lens.

Hebenton was wounded twice and survived the war. After Armistice, his battery was part of the occupation force in Cologne, Germany. His brother George also served. George was a member of the Black Watch, was killed at the Battle of Loos in France. Their other brother David enlisted in the 58th Battery and was wounded but survived the war.
