John Sammiel Hall

He died as his battalion was attacking Hallu in the Llandovery Castle operation at the start of the Hundred Days Offensive.


John Sammiel Hall of Shallow Lake, Ontario enlisted April 24, 1916 at age twenty-one. He served at the Western front as a private with the 38th Battalion from June 26, 1917 until his death August 10, 1918. He died as his battalion was attacking Hallu in the Llandovery Castle operation at the start of the Hundred Days Offensive. He was struck by machine gun fire and died instantly. He was buried but his grave was lost in subsequent fighting. His name can be found on the Vimy Memorial.

His parents, John and Margaret Hall, were devastated. His father couldn’t speak of his son for years and his mother went through a dark period too. His great-nephews were named in his memory.
