Trooper Frederick Wood, of the 10th Regiment Canadian Mounted Rifles, was among the first wave of mounted troops to enter the Great War. Wood, a farmer, enlisted at Grenfell, Saskatchewan, on January 5,1915. At the beginning of the war, most combatant nations fielded cavalry units, thinking that they could still be effective. However, advancements in killing technology, such as rapid-fire machine guns, and heavy artillery, quickly made formerly effective attack techniques, such as cavalry charges, obsolete.
