How to Write a Paragraph

Remember in high school when your teachers had you write three paragraph essays – introduction, thesis point #1, thesis point #2, thesis point #3, conclusion. They had you do this not because it makes for very interesting reading, but because it’s the training wheels of essay writing. Once you reach the big leagues of university (or, really hopefully, still in high school) the training wheels come off and three paragraphs just doesn’t cut it anymore.

You might still have three main areas of focus within your thesis, but these should include multiple, well-developed paragraphs, with proper transitions and unique pieces of evidence.

Each paragraph should consist of an opening statement, followed by evidence to support that claim, and a concluding sentence that relates the material back to your thesis. Keep them clear and flowing from one paragraph to the next and you’ll be on the right track for success.
