Gastown

The city's oldest neighbourhood

In 1867, "Gassy" Jack Deighton--known for blowing a lot of hot air as he told his tall tales--arrived on the south shore of Burrard Inlet with a barrel of whiskey. He gave his name to what would ultimately become Vancouver. "Gastown" was not genteel enough for the  city fathers, though, who changed it to Granville in 1870.

Although the neighbourhood was nearly razed after sliding into skid row status by the 1960s, the community rallied to save the historic area and its attractive heritage buildings. Gastown is now a funky mix of old and new, where residents and tourists alike can explore and enjoy.

Stroll down the cobbled streets. Explore its historic buildings, courtyards and mews. Enjoy its unique shopping, nightlife, attractions and special events.
