Canada’s History: Canada’s History magazine nominated for two National Magazine Awards.

May 02, 2016

Canada’s History magazine has been nominated for two National Magazine Awards.

The first nomination, in the category of Health & Medicine, is for “A Pox on Our Nation,” by writer and historian Christopher Rutty. Rutty is a Toronto-based medical historian in private practice with expertise in the history of public health, vaccines and biotechnology.

His feature examined how smallpox and other deadly diseases — many introduced by European explorers and settlers — decimated Aboriginal populations in North and South America. He also documents the key role that the Hudson’s Bay Company played in providing vaccinations against smallpox to First Nations communities on the West Coast of Canada. Read the article

The second nomination, in the category of Profile, is for “The Twisted Genius of George Feyer,” by Brad Mackay. Mackay is an Ottawa based writer and author whose work has appeared in many publications. His feature tells the story of one of Canada’s comic geniuses — a celebrity cartoonist whose public zest for life hid a dark personal side, and whose life ended in tragedy.

Congratulations to both writers, as well as the team at Canada’s History Society, and particularly to Senior Editor Nelle Oosterom, who was the lead editor for both feature articles, and Art Director James Gillespie, who designed “A Pox on our Nation,” and Designer Andrew Workman, who designed “The Twisted Genius of George Feyer.” Read the article
