Kensington Market: The FIRST 150 Years is an interactive documentary that will tell the story of the communities and generations that have made the Market their home. It will explore the people who have lived here for almost two centuries, those that live here today and explore the forces that will impact the Market’s future.
From an open-air Jewish market to the market it is today, Kensington has a rich history that will be captured and shared, in the shadow of the towering urban development that now accelerates around it.
Director Stuart Clarfield’s roots in the market go back over 100 years; to his great grandparents’ arrival just before the First World War. At that time, eighty-five percent of the Jewish population of Toronto lived in the Market. In the decades that would follow, Kensington became a home to Portuguese, Caribbean, and Asian communities, to name a few. Today it remains the most diverse six blocks in Toronto.
The story of the Market in many ways mirrors the story of Toronto - and of Canada. As we near Canada’s 150th birthday, they will share the Market’s story with audiences and students across the city and across Canada, for generations to come.
The Mission Media Company is inviting people to share their personal stories about the market online, through their #MyKensington campaign on Twitter & Instagram.
