Two Generals

Support Canada's History in other ways (more)

by Scott Chantler

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Scott Chantler’s graphic memoir Two Generals is no exception. The beautifully illustrated book is based on the 1943 wartime diary of Scott’s grandfather Law Chantler, the 1944 letters home of the latter’s best friend Jack Chrysler, and the military diary of the Highland Light Infantry of Canada.

Secured with an elastic strap in the manner of a notebook, it follows the experiences of Law Chantler and Jack Chrysler as they take part in the Normandy invasion and the subsequent fighting leading up to the end of World War II. Throughout the book, Scott Chantler uses a dull olive colour scheme to paint an engaging image of war, but he switches to shades of red to depict scenes of violence and death.

Two Generals details the training and other events many soldiers experienced during the war, with accurate depictions of wartime uniforms and weapons. It’s a fantastic book that also tells a story of friendship and camaraderie in a time of great turmoil.
