Citizen Sailors: Chronicles of Canada’s
Naval Reserve, 1910–2010

Support Canada's History in other ways (more)

by edited by Richard Gimblett and Michael L. Hadley

Canada’s Naval Reserve has played an important role in sustaining our maritime presence over the past century. From rapid expansion in wartime to more peaceful roles in the postwar period, the Naval Reserve has provided Canada’s navy with men and women willing to answer the call of duty.

Citizen Sailors is an edited volume that documents the rich history of these men and women. It includes special chapters exploring every aspect of the Naval Reserve’s history, including a unique look at the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve that operated as part of the Royal Navy Reserve from 1900 to 1920 and whose recruits saw action throughout the First World War.

The well-illustrated volume also includes an index of Naval Reserve vessels and an index of the twenty-eight Naval Reserve divisions that have operated across Canada. For the thousands of Canadians who have walked through their halls and served in the reserves, and for the thousands of young Canadians that participate in cadet programs each year, this is a valuable resource.
