Project: Women's Rights in Canada

My project is about the journey that women took to attain equal rights  as men. I talk about Women's Suffrage, the Persons Case, and something that affects Canadians even today, the Gender Pay Gap.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

There are many new interesting and shocking discoveries that I made on my Heritage Fair/Young Citizens experience, but I think the most appalling thing of all was that at one point at time women were not persons of the law. They were denied even the simplest of rights, such as voting, owning property, and having a job of their choice.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

Don't take what you have for granted. Whether you are a man or a woman, there are so many opportunities that we couldn't have had before. So next time you are casting your vote, or going to work, smile a little more for he people who dedicated their lives for yours.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

When I think about my future, I see myself voting, getting a degree in university, work in a field that I want to, and feeling equal to my peers. Women back then like the Famous Five had to fight for the simplest things that I take for granted today, like owning property, voting and even working, so I would consider myself lucky and to respect the littlest things about life.
