Project: The Black Devil's Brigade

My project is about the Black Devils Brigade, an elite Canadian and American force created during WWII. My project consists of a  interview with a former member, information and a slideshow of pictures.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I thought it was cool how the Black Devils nickname came to be. They darkened there faces with shoe polish because most of the missions were at night. They were called Devils because no one saw them coming.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I have learned that you can be a very brave person and still have lots of fear. It is very important for Canadians to remember the many sacrifices made by our Canadian Military in order for us to live in the beautiful free country of Canada.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

I live each day, not wondering if I will survive. I have all the comforts at home and company of my family and friends. The Brigade often went without food or shelter.

Sam, I did not get to see you present this project at school but feel this video has allowed me to see how much you learned and enjoyed this project. Very well done!

Well done, Sam. I know so little about Canadian Military history. Thank you for a very enlightening presentation.

Very impressive Sam along with being a very interesting topic. My father was in world war II so I did a project on that when I was going to school. I wasn't near as good as you at public speaking. :)

A well done project, young Sam. I had the privilege of meeting your great-grandfather a couple of times, and was especially honored to have him and your relatives attend the FSSFA reunion in Halifax in 2009. It is tremendous to see a young person like yourself stand proud to remember and speak of this very special group of soldiers. Thank you from the family if Staff Sergeant Frank Harvey who perished in Italy. Please keep up the good work. Herb Peppard is a special man. You now have great memories to add to those if your great-grampie.

    Most sincerely,
    Mary Bhagan
