Jenna Winnipeg, Manitoba

Fair address: Red River Heritage Fair

Project: Nellie McClung

This project gives an overview of Nellie McClung's life.  It was focused on events such as the Person's Case and Nellie McClung being elected to the Alberta Legislature.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I learned that without Nellie McClung, women like me may have not been allowed to vote today. We also may not have been allowed to run for senate. I learned that Nellie McClung helped give women the rights we have today.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I learned through studying Nellie McClung that perseverance and courage are two character traits that can have a big impact on what you do. If Nellie McClung had not had this courage and perseverance, she would not have accomplished what she did. Today, we need to be courageous in what we do, whether it is sharing what we believe with others or fighting for the rights of others.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

Nellie McClung did not have the right to vote and was not considered a person. Woman were looked down upon when Nellie McClung lived. Today I have the right to vote, I am considered a person and I am not looked down upon because I am a woman.

I am simply amazed! Your work was absolutely phenomenal! You mentioned that Nellie was from around the Chatsworth area in Ontario and that’s where I’m from/live. That gave me a cool connection to your topic! I loved the fact that you had so many interesting video effects. Also, I thought that having women representing those from the past, enhanced your project. Finally, the puzzle was such a smart and unique idea that represented your message: “that we are all important pieces to the puzzle of Canada’s identity. I really, sincerely enjoyed viewing your video! The best of luck to you!

Awesome video! I liked how you explained how it was like a puzzle. The script and the video were both really clear and easy to watch. I enjoyed watching and learned a lot about Nellie McClung, and the Famous Five.
