Fair address: Prince Edward Island Provincial Fair

Project: History Of PEI railway

My project is about the history of the Prince Edward Island railway. I have always been interested in the railway system and why it no longer operates on Prince Edward Island. The railway system really made a difference in the history of PEI, with out it PEI may not have chosen to join Canada.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I learned that the railway system changed history and changed transportation for the Islanders. I also learned that without the railway we may not have joined confederation.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I have learned that there is a lot of research involved in heritage fair projects. There are many resources available like museums, libraries and online documents. I now know that it is important to site where I got information from about the history of the railway on PEI.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

We are able to travel fast and far compared with islanders living at the time that the railway was built. Cars, transport trucks, recreational vehicles and planes have made it possible to travel almost anywhere. Unlike people living in the 17-1800's we can easily connect with our neighbors and friends and there are more resources around like grocery stores in most towns.

Harrison, just watched your video, well done, mom actually took the train from Uigg to Kinkora in the late forties to work at the store. Many a nights staying at your great grandfathers place I heard that whistle blowing. Putting coins on the track with your uncle Blair to see how flat they would get, does bring back a lot of memories. Again great job

Harrison this is so wonderful!!! Growing up next to the railway - your video brought back so many lovely memories from the Railway station in Kinkora which was right next to the Keefe Homestead!! The Kinkora Choir started their trek to Expo 1967 in Montreal from our station. Your Great great grandfather John Keefe was the stationmaster in the early 1900's. Picking blueberries back the fields along the tracks - The Engineer would always blow the train horn and give me a big wave :) Living near by we were very used to the horn - but many a visitor to Grammie's house thought the train was going to come through the house as the windows would shake and rattle!! Good luck and thanks for the memories :)

Harrison - What a fabulous tribute to a very important part of out Island history. A couple of important things that reinforce your documentary. 1) growing up next to the Kinkora Railway station as did your Grandfather Lennie the closeness of the track and whistle truly made the windows shake and any visitors scared!; The railway was the conduit for so many significant events - The Kinkora Choir going to the 1967 world fair and Expo in Montreal: 2) The arrival of so many family and friends! Thanks for bringing back so many lovely memories
