Fledgling
Lena Rye, a 13-year old student from Winona Senior Public School in Toronto, Ontario authored a vivid description of family life back in 1918 as the war raged on. Lena penned a fictional account describing herself as a 20-year-old woman living in Toronto whose twin brother was injured in battle. Haunted by the death of one of his fellow soldiers, she tries to help him recover.






Mylan Champagne, 2012 French winner of the Kayak Kids' Illustrated History AwardFrench winner:
Mylan Champagne, Les Éboulements, Quebec

La bataille des plaines d'Abraham
Mylan Champagne, an 11-year old from L’École Primaire Léonce-Boivin in Les Éboulements, Quebec captured the French victories at Fort William Henry, Fort Carillon and Fort Oswega by creating a colourful comic strip about the Seven Years’ War and the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. Mylan’s artistic and historically accurate piece details the eventual surrender of the French and the signing of the Treaty of Paris, whereby the British provided the right of religious freedom to French Catholics.
