In 1914, racism drove Charlotte Edith Anderson Monture, a member of the Six Nations of the Grand River near Brantford, to pursue her training as a nurse in the United States. Not a single Canadian nursing school would accept her. In 1917, when the United States entered the war, Charlotte volunteered for the U.S. Medical Corps and served in a hospital in France. After the war, she returned to Six Nations and worked as nurse.
