He served in the 236th Battalion (The New Brunswick Kilties) and later suffered heart problems from being gassed at war.


Guilford Irvin Smith of Smithsville, Nova Scotia enlisted on August 29, 1917, from Fredericton, New Brunswick. He served in the 236th Battalion (The New Brunswick Kilties) and later suffered heart problems from being gassed at war. After the war, he lived in Port la Tour, Nova Scotia worked as the master of a yacht, and married Married Leona Deborah Swaine. The couple had three kids—Claire, Gerald, and Howard. Swaine died January 21, 1975, and Smith died May 3, 1947. The pall bearers at his funeral were First World War veterans.
